first time

welcome to a world of floating

To someone who hasn’t floated, it is difficult to compare to anything they have experienced before. It is referred to by many as a massage for the body and mind. Others use floating solely as a means for extreme relaxation and stress/pain relief. Still some would say it is their fast track to a deeply meditative state. The truth is that floating is not only unique to the individual in many ways, but it can also be unique each session. Experienced floaters are often hesitant to set expectations when discussing floating to those who have yet to try it. Reason being, it is a personal experience similar to the individual versions of flow state that athletes, artists or meditators encounter. That said, there are some guidelines that can help optimize each float session.

floating step-by-step guide

1. first time?

If it is your first time floating (or if you just need a refresher), we will walk you through an orientation upon arrival. This will include a tour of the float suite or pod. Please come 15 minutes prior to your appointment if you require an orientation.

2. no cellphones

Please turn off your cellphone.

3. contacts & jewelry

If you wear contacts, don’t forget to take them out. Same goes for jewelry. Neither may fare well in the 30% salt solution.

4. pre-float shower

Prior to floating, you will take a shower to thoroughly remove all dirt and oils from your hair and body. Please do not use conditioner in the pre-float shower.

5. bathing suits

It is advised to float without a bathing suit as to minimize the tactile sensory input. However, if you would feel more comfortable with one, that is fine too.

6. cuts or abrasions

If you have any small cuts or abrasions, apply a thin layer of Vaseline (provided) to the area to avoid irritation from the salt water.

7. excess water

Wipe all excess water from your face before entering the tank. This helps avoid the possible distraction of that water dripping down your face while floating.

8. enter tank slowly

Enter the tank slowly. First-time floaters are often surprised by the buoyancy of the water. Begin by sitting and then lying back so that you are facing the ceiling of the tank.

9. close door & turn off lights

Close the door of the tank and push the light button to turn off the lights.

10. experience begins

The experience begins. We can play intro music to transition you into the float if you would like. We can also advise as to some mental exercises that will allow you to let go of the outside world and fully enjoy this alone time.

11. end of session

At the end of the session, we will pipe in some music to gently bring you back. At this point, you will turn the lights back on and exit the tank. Be sure to push your hair back from your forehead when sitting up to avoid salt water in your eyes.

12. post-float shower

Another shower is advised to remove all of the salt water from your hair and body…both of which will feel silky and smooth due the Epsom Salt.

best practices & tips

pre-float

  • Limit caffeine intake prior to floating.
  • Have a small meal about an hour before floating.
  • Refrain from shaving too soon before your float. The high salt content might sting.
  • If you dye your hair, make sure dye is set before floating (usually about one week).
  • If you wear contacts, don’t forget your case and solution.

post float

  • We have a vanity room with hairdryers and all the toiletries you will need to head back out into the world.
  • Hang out for a bit in our lounge. Have a cup of tea and bask in the post-float glow.
  • You may want to bring a notebook or sketchpad. Oftentimes the insights from the experience are fleeting as in a dream. You may want to capture them before leaving the center.
